Vinyl wallpaper is a common, cost effective way to alter the appearance of an interior room. However, though all types of vinyl wallpaper perform the same function, there are several different variants which have their own set of advantages and disadvantages. Understanding what each type of vinyl wallpaper has to offer can help you choose the type of vinyl wallpaper that fulfills your needs best.
Solid Vinyl Wallpaper
Solid vinyl wallpaper is wallpaper that is completely made out of vinyl through and through. This gives it complete immunity to water exposure, which means it can be installed in humid rooms like kitchens and bathrooms without having to worry about water damage. It is also extremely physically durable, and can withstand scratching and tearing fairly well, which means it will not show wear as easily as other types of vinyl wallpaper will. However, solid vinyl wallpaper comes at a higher price tag than other types of vinyl wallpaper, and its durability means that it can be more time consuming and costly to remove if you want to remodel a room.
Vinyl Coated Wallpaper
Vinyl coated wallpaper is the most common type of vinyl wallpaper, because it also tends to be fairly inexpensive, making it a better fit for homeowners with a tight budget. It is made out of paper that is coated with vinyl, providing a higher degree of durability when compared to traditional paper wallpaper. Though not as moisture resistant as solid vinyl wallpaper, it is much easier to strip from the walls, making remodeling an easier process.
Paper Backed Vinyl
Paper backed vinyl wallpaper is basically vinyl coated wallpaper, except the paper backing is not covered. This helps reduce the cost of the wallpaper, but also makes paper backed vinyl wallpaper extremely susceptible to water damage, as the paper backing can begin to peel, bubble, and separate from the vinyl facing over time. The only reason why paper backed vinyl should be chosen over other types of wallpaper is price: the minimal amount of vinyl used in its construction helps keep costs low.
Fabric Backed Vinyl
Fabric backed vinyl wallpaper is a more expensive wallpaper option than even solid vinyl wallpaper, but for good reason. It is made out of a fabric backing with a vinyl face – which means it can be easily washed, scrubbed, and cleaned without fear of damaging the wallpaper. Furthermore, it can be easily removed from the walls on which it is installed by simply peeling the fabric backing off of the wall, unlike solid vinyl wallpaper which has to be stripped. Fabric backed vinyl comes in a variety of grades, with the higher grades offering increased durability at an increased price.
