Tips To Keep Your Drapery Looking Sharp

Your home's drapery is important for controlling the amount of light entering the home and ensuring that you can enjoy the privacy of your home. However, it is a fact of life that your drapes will accumulate a shocking amount of dirt and dust as time progresses. These accumulations can severely degrade the appearance of your drapes, and while it is possible to clean drapery, many homeowners make mistakes that reduce the effectiveness of cleaning. Luckily, there are a couple of tips you can follow to help ensure that your drapes always look their best.

Use Proper Technique When Dusting

Dust is one of the most common forms of debris that will dirty your drapes. Luckily, you can usually remove dust without needing to formally wash the drapes. While you may think that dusting is a simple task that requires no direction, this is not true. In fact, failing to dust in the correct direction can make it exceedingly difficult for you to remove all of the dust, which will ensure that your drapes always look somewhat dull and dirty.

When dusting the drapes, you should always start at the top. Many people will start from the middle or bottom because it is easier to reach, but while you are working, dust from the top of the drapes can fall onto the bottom of the drapes. To avoid this problem, you should always start at the top, and use a back-and-forth motion when moving the duster.

Be Careful When Drying The Drapes

Eventually, it will be essential for you to wash and dry the drapes. Whether it is for removing a noticeable stain or simply to freshen them up, washing drapery can be more difficult than you may expect. Many homeowners will make the mistake of simply tossing the drapes into the washer and dryer or leaving them to dry in the sun. While it is generally safe to using a washing machine on drapes, the same can not be said for drying them with a dryer or sunlight.

Dryers can cause drapes to become stretched and warped. This occurs because as they tumble in the machine, it is possible for them to become tangled. As a result, you should generally let the drapes air dry after washing them, but you should never make the mistake of drying them in sunlight. The rays from the sun can interact with the water and soap molecules that are left on the drapes, which can cause bleaching.

When drying drapes, it is best to hang them in the bathroom from the shower rod. The ventilation fan and fact that they are hanging will help ensure they dry as quickly as possible. Also, it is usually easy to keep the bathroom dark, which can help keep your colors bright.

Keeping your drapes clean does not have to be a risky task. While there are many mistakes some people make when doing this task, following these two tips will help you avoid a couple of common causes of damage when doing this essential task.
