Taking Care Of Your Gutters So They Take Care Of Your Home

Your gutter are very important as they are used to keep water away from your foundation. Water is redirected away, and your home will remain dry when there are wet conditions. Taking care of your gutter system is something you should do routinely to make sure it is working properly to keep your home safe from water damage.

Here are some guidelines you can follow in doing your own routine gutter maintenance:

How Often Should It Be Done?

You can check your gutters whenever you would like, but it is a good idea to do extensive routine checks at in the springtime and in the autumn. Springtime checks will allow you to take care of any damage you may have contracted from harsh winter weather and it will prepare your home for the rainy season. Doing checks in the autumn will help you prepare for oncoming inclement weather soon to arrive.

Cleaning Your Gutters

One big part of maintaining your gutters, is keeping them free and clear of any type of buildup. You will want to take the time to clean them thoroughly each season so the water will not back up, possibly getting underneath your shingles in the process. Water buildup can be very damaging to your roof, as well as your interior if there start to be leaking conditions.

Get on a ladder and take a look inside your gutter to see how much debris is inside. You will want to put on a thick pair of gloves to protect your hands when scooping out the material into a bucket. When you have removed all sticks, leaves, dirt and other debris, you will want to clean the gutter using a mild detergent and water.

Bring your garden hose up to the gutter and allow the water to run through it to see if it gets through the entire thing without any leaks or drips occurring. This is a great way to help you find damaged areas. You will also want to make sure the water goes through the downspout and clean it out if it appears to be clogged.

Repairing Damage

If you find any areas where the gutter seems to be be cracked or has a small hole in it, you will want to do a repair to help retain water. This can be done with the use of some flashing and caulk. Simply place the flashing over the compromised area and use the caulk to adhere it in place. Smaller cracks can be repaired with caulk alone by squeezing it out over the crack and pushing it into the crack to seal.

If there are areas where the gutter is pulling away from the wall of your home, due to sagging from overfilling, you will want to use gutter brackets to place it in the proper location. In time the brackets may fall off if the gutter is bent. These can be replaced easily with the use of new brackets and screws bought from a hardware store.
